🚨GTM engineering headcount doubled in a year. In one month this summer, Sales Ops Specialist postings fell from 247 to 54.

The ops team is being rebuilt while we watch, and most companies are rebuilding it in the wrong order.⚠️

Here is what the hiring data shows.

Growth Unhinged and Sumble analyzed 120,798 GTM job posts at US digital-native companies. GTM engineering headcount doubled, while total GTM posts fell 15% and SDR posts fell 21%.

PredictLeads tracked 58,319 US sales and RevOps postings from August into September. Director of RevOps postings rose 47% and specialist postings collapsed. Single titles are small samples, so read the direction, not the decimals. The direction is not subtle.

And Clay raised at $7.1 billion on September 9. The market is paying for people who build systems.

I agree with that bet. I have watched ops teams lose entire quarters reconciling dashboards nobody opened.

But there is a number in LeanData's June survey of 201 senior leaders at large B2B companies that I have not seen anyone post: 82% say clean data and reliable routing have to come before scaling AI, and fewer than one in three have the enforcement in place to do it. Process maturity is the weakest pillar in their data and has barely moved in three years. AI for content is at 46% adoption. AI for lead routing is at 11%.

We are hiring builders to automate processes nobody wrote down.

When I ran teams, nothing reached commit without five answers: access to power, procurement process, friction, technical win, help needed. The definitions came first. The tooling came later, and it worked because it had something real to enforce.

What would change my mind: teams that hire GTM engineers first showing better stage conversion within two quarters without touching their stage definitions.
